Shelly is a Bulgarian company, based in Sophia, offering hardware and products for the IoT. Shelly is a serious competitor to products such as Fibaro, Qubino, Enocean, Sonoff…
Shelly products come with a cloud solution, an Android application and IoS. The aim here is a stand-alone solution that does not upload data to a cloud. Our data is and will remain private!
Model selection#
For our first tests, we focused on the Shelly 2.5:
- Made in Europe
- Price, depending on the ESP8266 chip, is 2 to 3 times lower
- 110/240 VAC or 24/60 VDC operation
- Supports loads of 2x2300 Watts or 2x10 Amps
- Multi-purpose where competitors offer 1 product for 1 need
- Compact size (smallest)
Objectives#
Present the installation of a Shelly 2.5 module, installed in a sock-type flush-mounted switch box. This module controls
- 2 lighting lines via 2 relays
- 1 roller shutter:
- up
- down
- stop
Materials required#
- 1 Shelly 2.5 module
- 1 cable tester
- 1 wire cutter
- 1 wire stripper
- 1 set of 1.5mm² rigid wires (blue, red, violet)
- 1 flush-mounting box, like sock
- Connector like Wago

Wiring - Single channel operation (1 relay)

The Shelly module is connected in parallel with an electrical switch.
- The module is electrically powered as soon as:
- the phase wire is connected to terminal L
- the neutral wire is connected to terminal N
- Output O1 supplies power to the lighting line.
- The SW1 input recovers the cut phase from the switch.
In FRANCE:
- Phase wire is red
- Cut phase wire is purple
- Neutral wire is blue
- Ground is two-tone (yellow and green)
In France, potential difference between:
- Earth and neutral is zero
- Phase and neutral not equal to zero (220 / 240 vAC here)
